All God’s Creatures is a prequel to Fox. Its hero, mild-mannered editor Ben Fairweather, is horrified when religious magazine he edits is taken over by fanatical movement which holds that animals are closer than humans to God and should be allowed to receive Holy Communion. Amid a national religious revival, the idea that animal instinct should be prized above human intellect becomes mainstream and Ben finds himself cancelled as a petphobic bigot.
Ben finds a new job as a pianist in a West End nightclub. There he meets Anita Scott, an journalist bent on exposing the Russian oligarch Lord Ogorodnikov – newly elevated to the House of Lords – whom she accuses of cultural vandalism.
Ogorodnikov’s activities are in fact more sinister than Anita realises: he is plotting to take control of London’s financial system with the aid of a top intelligence agent, sent from Moscow in the guise of an Orthodox. Before they know it, Ben and Anita are drawn into a world of murder and art forgery with their own lives on the line.
